New Innovative Outpatient Procedure for Birth Control
New Innovative Outpatient Procedure for Birth Control

Geneva Medical Center offers a new innovative outpatient procedure for women searching for a birth control procedure that offers peace of mind and the ability to focus on your family – and yourself.

Essure, a new permanent birth-control procedure is a practical alternative approach for women with busy lifestyles. Unlike a tubal ligation (fallopian tubes tied), it requires no incisions, punctures, clippings or burning to the body. Sam Ahuja, MD, OB-GYN, FACOG, is the first obstetrician and gynecologist in Ashtabula County trained to perform this innovative procedure.

During the 20- to 30-minute procedure, a woman’s cervix is numbed. A telescope-like device is inserted through the uterus to the fallopian tubes. The device guides a 1-1/2 inch-long, spring-coil into each fallopian tube. In about 90 days, tissue grows around each coil to permanently block the fallopian tubes. A second birth-control method must be used until a special X-ray confirms the fallopian tubes are permanently blocked.

“The benefit of the Essure® procedure is that it is more comfortable for the patient. Only slight, temporary cramping, similar to a menstrual cycle, is typically experienced following the procedure,” says Dr. Ahuja. “This procedure also can be recommended for women who are obese, or for those who previously had abdominal or pelvic surgery.” Women who have recently given birth usually need to wait six weeks before having this new sterilization procedure performed.

The Essure procedure is the first and only FDA approved female sterilization procedure to have zero pregnancies in the clinical trials. The Essure procedure is permanent and is NOT reversible. Therefore, you should be sure you do not want children in the future.

Questions to consider:

  • Are you waiting for your partner to make a decision to get a vasectomy?
  • Do you desire your body to be free of birth control hormones?
  • Do you desire sexual spontaneity in your relationship without the worry of an unplanned pregnancy?
