Introducing quality sleep medicine. For quality sleep.
UH Geneva Medical Center has partnered with the Lodge at Geneva State Park
to open the new Center for Advanced Sleep Medicine, a state-of-the-art diagnostic
monitoring facility set in the Lodge’s private, vacation environment on the shores
of Lake Erie.
More than 40 million Americans will suffer from some type of sleep disorder this year.
These disorders are vastly underreported, and diagnosed cases are often undertreated.
With that in mind, these are key facts to be aware of:
- An untreated or undertreated sleep disorder can lead to …
- Depression
- General fatigue
- Irritability
- Reduced attention span and ability to concentrate
- Reduced productivity
- Memory loss
- Increased likelihood of accidents
- More frequent illnesses
- Serious physical pathologies, including impaired heart function and diabetes
- One in every 15 Americans suffers from sleep apnea. It is estimated that one case in 50 is
undiagnosed.
- During a sleep cycle, an apnea sufferer can stop breathing for 10 to 30 seconds at a time,
as many as 600 times.
- Untreated sleep apnea sufferers are four times more likely to have a stroke and three times
more likely to have heart disease.
- As many as 40 percent of adults experience insomnia during the course of a year.
- Narcolepsy affects as many as 200,000 Americans, but fewer than 50,000 are diagnosed.
- Over 65 million Americans suffer from circadian-related disorders.
- More than two million children suffer from sleep disorders.
- Drowsy drivers cause over 100,000 traffic accidents every year, resulting in 6,000 traffic fatalities.
